Lymph Node Surgery
In assessing the spread of cancer, a procedure known as a sentinel lymph node biopsy may be conducted.
What are sentinel lymph nodes?
Sentinel lymph nodes are the initial nodes cancer cells reach if they spread, typically located in the axillary lymph nodes under the arms.
How are sentinel lymph nodes identified?
Sentinel lymph nodes’ locations vary and are identified using a combination of a radioisotope and a blue dye.
What happens during examination?
Sentinel lymph nodes are examined in the laboratory to detect any cancer cells. If none are found, it suggests that other lymph nodes in the armpit are likely unaffected, minimizing the need for further surgery.
What if cancer cells are present?
If cancer cells are detected in the sentinel nodes, additional surgery may be necessary to remove more lymph nodes from under the arm.
