Gynecomastia

Understanding the condition

Gynecomastia, affecting between 50 to 65% of boys and men worldwide, is characterized by abnormal growth of male breast tissue. This condition often arises due to hormonal imbalances, leading to enlargement of one or both breasts.

What are the causes and effects?

Gynecomastia can happen when the amount of testosterone in the body drops compared with estrogen (female hormone).

If your body produces too much estrogen or you have low testosterone, your breasts may enlarge.

This condition can lead to mental health concerns due to changes in chest appearance.

What are the medical considerations and procedures involved?

A medical check-up is essential before considering surgical treatment.

The goal of the procedure is to restore a normal chest anatomy by using liposuction to remove fat, excising excess breast gland tissue, and, if necessary, addressing excess skin.

The procedure typically takes about one hour under general anesthesia and is performed on an outpatient basis.
